A Dental Solution For Missing Teeth
How Bridges Work
Bridges span the space where the teeth are missing and are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, serve as anchors for the bridge. A replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments. As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges. Porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.
Different Types of Dental Bridges
At Acosta Dental Arts, PA, we understand the importance of maintaining proper function of your mouth – not just for comfort and appearance but for health reasons as well. Our dental office can provide the following tooth bridge options:
- Fixed Bridges: This traditional form of dental bridge can only be removed by a professional dentist and is designed to fill the gap of the the missing tooth (teeth). Two crowns are attached to the natural teeth that surround the tooth gap, where most likely the natural teeth will have to be sculpted down a bit to make room for the the crown and dental bridge.
- Bonded Bridges: Usually less expensive than a fixed tooth bridge and is also known as the “Maryland” dental bridge. This cosmetic procedure is very popular in replacing the front teeth of patients with a tooth gap, in which a false replacement tooth is attached to the two surrounding natural teeth with metal bands and resin cement.
- Cantilever Bridge: This tooth bridge is used where there are only teeth on one side of where the replacement tooth will go. Typically used on the front teeth or in any area where the patient’s mouth isn’t stressed when chewing.
